HOW TO ORDER (purchase) MAPS:

USA MAPS:

1. Locate the USGS Quadrangles that you want using this tool:

2. Purchase maps using this tool:

Note that when you click on a location, it will show you all the maps available for that location. Pay attention to the size and to the year. Sometimes older maps are better than newer ones, as the newer ones are computer generated and are very ugly and lack detail.

CANADA MAPS

Canadian topographic maps are identified with a numbering system that makes more sense than the USA place-name system. You can learn more about it here: https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/earth-sciences/geography/topographic-information/maps/9765

I recommend ordering Canadian maps from this website: https://www.maptown.com/Default.asp

In the Canadian topographic Map section, they have a tool that will help you identify which “quadrangles” you want to order.

HOW TO PRINT MAPS FROM WITHIN THE KROKA OFFICE

The Kroka laser printer can print 11x17 paper. Two 11x17 sheets of paper are able to fit a single USGS quadrangle - espeically if the white border is removed. Apple Preview or Photoshop software can help edit a JPG or PDF image to remove the outside white border. Adobe Acrobat Software can help automatically "tile" a large image onto two sheets of paper.

1. GET YOUR SOURCE FILE: (a) Check the Kroka Google Drive - maybe we already have it? MEDIA -> MAPPING -> MAPS (Finished) -> USGS TOPO LIBRARY (b) Download the latest quadrangles here: https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer. Note that we AVOID THE GEOSPATIAL_PDF file format, and instead we recommend downloading the JPG format.
2. EDIT THE SOURCE FILE: Use Apple Preview or Adobe Photoshop to crop the image. Perhaps you only need a section of the map, and can crop into a rectangle that will fit on 11x17? Otherwise you want to crop away the map border and just show the map itself. If you are very particular, you can copy and past the compass rose, map name, scale, etc. within the boundary of the map.
3. PRINT THE FILE: If you have cropped to a single unique shape, Apple Preview will do a good job of printing. Otherwise if you want to print the entire quadrangle, you can use automatic "tiling" (fitting a large image onto two pieces of paper). Try using Adobe Acrobat software, which has a "Poster/Tiling" feature as part of it's printing dialog. Note that Kroka may have a collection of special "rite-in-the-rain" 11x17 paper, which will make for a much more rugged map.
